ConforMIS taking a custom-fit approach to joint replacements

4543405618_6cce9193b5_zConforMIS Inc. is taking the age of medical customization to a new level: knee replacements tailored for each patient.

While its larger competitors sell off-the-shelf joint implants, Bedford-based ConforMIS is using advanced imaging software to design new implants based on the shape of the recipient’s knees.

At a new 41,000-square-foot manufacturing plant opened here last month, the company also has installed banks of 3-D printers that churn out patient-specific instruments used by orthopedic surgeons to fit implants. Eventually, it will be able to use the printers to produce implants themselves.
