App Seeks to Ease Orthopedic Surgery Planning

mediCAD Hectec partners with Siemens Healthineers to “digitalize” healthcare.

A new solution for orthopedic surgery planning is now available through Siemens Healthineers Digital Ecosystem, an online platform that gives healthcare providers access to applications that can help “digitalize” healthcare. “Siemens Healthineers has created an OpenApp Store to share a new way to organize and discover apps from Siemens Healthineers and other vendors – directly on the syngo.via. The store enables [users] to browse, download, and test apps as well as request quotations. mediCAD Hectec with its software solution is one of the first partners that has joined this store,” Stephanie Maier, marketing, mediCAD Hectec GmbH, told MD+DI.

mediCAD Classic is an orthopedic planning software solution that details, calculates, and documents the most effective alternatives before surgery. mediCAD provides “algorithms that automatically detect landmarks which help to determine a patient’s situation,” said Maier. “It makes planning way faster than needing to draw all landmarks manually. Many measurements are displayed and help the surgeon to decide how the patient can be treated.”

The software combines patient images and digital implant templates from 130 manufacturers for preoperative planning. The system supports a multi-modality approach. “With the possibility to choose the way of getting a pre-operative image for planning, like X-ray, MRI, or CBCT, surgeons are able to use the image that fits best to the case,” she said. “Sometimes an x-ray is enough to determine and evaluate a medical situation and continue to plan your surgery. But in more difficult cases, it’s often helpful to get a 3-dimensional picture through MRI and CBCT.”

The hope is to simplify planning. “Digital planning ensures a high level of preoperative planning and so operational quality. Up to 90% of time saving over conventional planning is guaranteed,” said Maier. “Through an integrated implant database with more than international 130 implant-manufacturers, surgeons have access to more than 500,000 templates that they can choose of. Through a digitalized pre-operative planning and post-operative control (that also can be done through mediCAD), doctors are able to document and archive their work to get the process revision-proofed.”
