Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Jaideep Iyengar uses a handheld robotics-assisted tool to make a 3-D representation of a specific knee durning a knee replacement surgery at O’Conner Hospital in San Jose, Calif., on Wednesday, May 17, 2017. The procedure was done with the assistance of a new surgical device called the NAVIO. The device allows the surgeon to collect patient-specific data during the procedure to build a 3D model of the patient’s knee to help plan the surgery. During the procedure, a handheld robotics-assisted tool is used to position NAVIO-specific cut guides exactly as intended, based on the patient-model. This extra layer of precision and accuracy enables optimal implant placement for better patient outcomes and recovery. (Dan Honda/Bay Area News Group)
